A Family Adventure at Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

Looking for an easy, fun, and memorable activity for the whole family? Our recent trip to Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary was just that! Tucked away in Jacksonville, this nonprofit animal sanctuary was the perfect outing for our group — from our toddler to grandma and aunt — and something everyone could enjoy together.

Catty Shack Ranch isn’t a huge park or zoo, which makes it wonderful for families with little ones or elders who prefer a relaxed pace. The walking paths are manageable, stroller-friendly, and not overwhelming, yet the sanctuary is big enough to keep everyone entertained with fascinating views of big cats and exotic animals. We were able to explore at our own pace, stop and take photos, and take breaks as needed — all without feeling rushed.

At the sanctuary, big cats like tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, and bobcats live in spacious, enriched habitats. The mission of Catty Shack Ranch is to provide a safe, forever home for these rescued animals — many of whom were once neglected, abandoned, or kept in unsafe private conditions — while also educating visitors on wildlife conservation and animal care.

Our visit included a relaxed self-guided tour through the animal habitats. We learned about the sanctuary’s mission, saw majestic animals lounging or playing, and enjoyed watching them up close in a setting that’s both respectful and educational. Volunteers shared stories with the kids and adults alike, making the experience engaging for all ages.

One of the things that stood out most was just how family-friendly Catty Shack Ranch is. There’s enough to see and learn, but it never felt overwhelming or too crowded. It was the perfect balance: interesting and educational, yet calm and easygoing for everyone in our group.

Whether you’re planning a casual weekend outing, a special family day, or just looking for something different to do together, Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is a great choice. We left with new memories, lots of photos, and a deeper appreciation for these incredible animals.

If you’re in the Jacksonville area or planning a trip nearby, definitely add this hidden gem to your list!
